Service Learning
Alzar School leaders are servant leaders. One of our “10 Elements of Leadership” is Community Membership and Service. Our students quickly discover, when on an expedition, they are a member of a tight-knit community which includes their cohorts, teachers, and other Alzar School staff. To be a contributing group member, one has to serve the group’s goals and mission, as well as individuals.
However, we don’t limit ourselves to our small group. Students discuss the other communities they belong to... their families, peer groups, hometowns, their country, and the global community. We focus on the idea that teen leaders can effectively influence their communities in a positive way by getting involved with service organizations or through creating their own service projects.
Every Alzar School expedition involves a service project related to the lessons students are learning. These projects can range from conservation efforts in conjunction with federal agencies to collection of school supplies for small rural schools in developing countries. For the Motorcycles to Mexico 2007 expedition, Alzar School administrators, worked with the Key Club of Boise High School to collect and distribute school supplies for Tarahumara children in rural Mexico. Our expeditions to Chile have “adopted” the CONIN Orphanage in Curico to support by providing much-needed supplies--diapers, toys, clothes, and love. Our staff is already setting up projects with the US Forest Service for students of future programs in Idaho to create and maintain recreational access points.
Nothing is more rewarding than giving of yourself and seeing it make a difference in the world. Alzar School students serve, and in so doing, elevate themselves and humankind.
