Academics
Founded by certified high school teachers, the Alzar School has always placed academic success in its top priorities.  Our teachers are able to work with students one-on-one and in small groups to tackle deep questions.  Daily academic sessions and frequent progress checks by our teachers ensure that students stay on track with their assignments.  Parents report that their teenagers return from Alzar School expeditions on pace with or ahead of their classmates, testimony to our teacher’s commitment to learning and the power of experiential education.

At the heart of the Alzar School’s educational philosophy is the belief that students learn better if they directly experience a topic.  That’s why our students return from international trips with a passion for foreign languages.  It is the reason students can draw on concrete examples when asked to describe geological features after discussing them from the depths of a river canyon.  To facilitate learning, our teachers make complicated lessons accessible by front-loading with basic information, then provide opportunities for students to tackle the information in practical, engaging ways, and then coordinate reflective exercises that help “connect the dots.”

Currently, the Alzar School works with universities to offer college credit for its expeditions.  Our school is also actively seeking accreditation from a number of organizations to offer a full range of high school courses.  The Alzar School considers itself a college preparatory program. Past students have been admitted to such colleges as George Washington University, University of the South - Sewanee, and San Diego State University.

“The principal and teachers at my school thought the expedition was a great program and the travel would be very educational.  I now know many things about the culture, terrain, and climate of Chile.  The Alzar School teachers kept us motivated to complete our assignments.”
